Fresh or dried herbs have been prepared for medicinal purposes for centuries, drawing on the accumulated wisdom and experience of generations of herbalists. Diagnosis and prescription are still best left to a qualified practitioner, although simple remedies can be prepared at home. Homer wrote of healing roots, one of the earliest records of the use of medicinal plants in Europe.

Early herbal medicine was based largely on superstition. Doctrine of Signatures stated that a herb would treat that part of the body that it most resembled. European settlers arriving in North America found that the native Indian people had their own version of this doctrine. Yellow herbs where associated with jaundice and red ones with blood disorders. In a magazine article I read just recently it illustrated this fact beautifully. Modern science can now easily identify what components of the herbs or foods we eat have which specific ingredient and how this helps either the heart or the eyes or the liver. I wish I could remember where I read the article, it might have been the Reader’s Digest.

Herbs have been used by man as food and as medicine for centuries. Herbs are natural, not instant. They work with the body not against it. Herbs can be compared with food; they feed the body. Herbs need to be used with wisdom and knowledge and not indiscriminately.
Check out Dr. Oz he encourages natural healing and herbs are the way to go.
