Herb Gardens – It’s easy to Create your Own
Growing your own Herbs
The best place to start when planning to grow your own herbs is with a tiny sunny spot near your house. This creates a two fold benefit. Firstly, you’ll smell their special aroma every time you pass them and secondly they are accessible so you can run outside and grab some anytime you need them. I suggest you start by using the ones you simply cannot live without, like parsley, basil, stevia, thyme and lavender. Every persons list will differ.
Some of the most colorful herbs can be planted among ornamental flowers rather than kept separate in a distinct herb garden. Space need not be a factor in creating your own herb garden. Here are some instructions for building a
Herb Wheel.
Herb Wheel
- Mark out the planned area, using a peg and a taut line to ensure a perfect circle, before removing the turf and some of the topsoil. Ideally, the subsoil should also be loosened.
- Position the edging materials, bricks bought at a home hardware store are ideal, and place them around the circumference.
- Quarter the circle with two lines of brick or stones to create four separate beds.

- Break up the excavated topsoil and refill the four quadrants almost to the surface of the brick paths.
- Plant pot-grown herbs of your choice, watering them beforehand and allowing enough room for expansion as they grow.
- Water in the plants if necessary, and then mulch with gravel or chippings to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
I’m including this picture, as you can see it’s not a circle but rather an oval. Be creative to suit the space that is available to you.
Happy Herbing!
